History of Hamilton

The city is named after George Hamilton, a Canadian merchant, and politician who founded the city after purchasing the Durand farm after the War of 1812.

Together with Nathaniel Hughson, Hamilton prepared a proposal for a courthouse and jail on the property and offered the land to the crown.

They then collaborated with James Durand who was a local member of the British Legislative Assembly to sell property holdings, this led to the formation of the Core District which the Hamilton town site became a member of.

Hamilton did not become dominant over the neighbouring towns immediately.

It was overshadowed by the nearby Dundas until in 1830 when the Burlington Canal linking Lake Ontario to Hamilton Harbour was opened, leading to its rapid development as a port and rail town.

Hamilton achieved official city status in June 1846. In 1854, the Great Western Railway was completed and became Hamilton’s first functioning railway and through it, the city got its first taste of the steel industry that it is known for throughout history.

Today, the city is known as the ‘Steel Capital of Canada’ as it produces 60% of the country’s steel.

In January 2001, the boundaries of the city were enlarged to absorb much of the surrounding communities that since 1974 were part of the Hamilton-Wentworth regional municipality.

The surrounding areas absorbed include the former towns of Dundas, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Flamborough and the former township of Glanbrook. This greatly increased the population and area of the city.

Before the amalgamation, the old city had slightly over three hundred thousand people, this increased to over five hundred thousand people.

The city has many local attractions and parks which means there are a lot of things to do in Hamilton.
